The initiative to hold the World University Games was put forward by Frenchman Jean Petitjean. He suggested the name “university Olympics” for them, but Petitjean’s friend Pierre de Coubertin persuaded him to give the Games a different name. The first official multi-sports competitions among students were held in May 1923 in Paris, France.
The Malta University Sports Club will be taking part in the 2013 games following numerous years' absences.
